With reference to the letter from this depart- -ment No. 6038/07 of the 18th. of last August, I am directed to inform you that the Secretary of State for the Colonies has ap- -proved the grant to the Japanese Community of a Crown Lease at a nominal rent of a site in the Sookumpoo Valley for the erection of a chapel and crematorium. Lord Crewe thinks, however, that, as this Government is providing the site at a merely nominal rent, the expenses of levelling and of erecting a boundary fence, if not of constructing an approach road, might reasonably be borne by the Japanese Community and I am, therefore, to enquire whether the said Community is prepared to pay these expenses.
I am, etc., (Sd.) C. Clementi,
p. Colonial Secretary.
The Consul-General for Japan.
